| The 19th Annual Apple Fest
sponsored by the Monmouth Museum will be held on
the Museum grounds, Monmouth Center, Saturday,
September 29, 2007 from 10 A. M to 4 P. M. The
Apple Fest serves as the Museum's end of season
fund raising event and brings the community
together for a day full of fun and interesting
activities for adults and children. Thanks to kind
donations of homemade apple pies from Monmouth's
great cooks, Apple Fest is the Museum's way of
celebrating the apple for which Monmouth orchards
are famous. The Apple Fest also exposes people to
a variety of apple related activities such as
cider pressing, apple arts and crafts, stenciling,
displays of apple varieties, and historic
artifacts associated with the harvesting and
processing of apples. |

| The Monmouth Museum's,
Stencil Shop plays an important part in the Apple
Fests. Mason J. Metcalf built the Stencil Shop in
1849 and used his shop for making a variety of
stencils. The date that the Stencil Shop was
plastered, (1852), is engraved on one of its
walls. The Stencil Shop is believed to be the sole
surviving example in New England of a 19th century
Stencil Shop. Among some of the stencil that are
on display at the Museum are "Ben Davis" and
"Fancy No. 1 Baldwin" Apple stencils which were
used to label the Apple boxes prior to shipping.
During the Apple Fest children get a chance to
experience how the stencils were used
firsthand. |

| The Monmouth Museum has
several interesting historical artifacts related
to the Cider Pressing business. There are a
variety of Apple baskets and buckets on display in
the Museum. There is also a pair of hickory
rollers, one with sockets and one with knobs,
which were used in a Knob Mill. Knob mills were a
large device used for Cider pressing. Knob mills
had a horse-drawn sweep, which was used for
operating this large cider
press. |

| There will be a special exhibit
on historic photographs in the Museum Gift Shop.
There will also be photographs of people having
fun at the last 18 Apple Fest
gatherings. |
